Forest of Reading® Voting Night is coming up soon—- Thursday, April 23rd from 6-7pm. At the moment, we have about a dozen kids who are eligible to vote—-they’ve read 8 – 10 books in their reading category, and several dozen more who are almost there. But no worries, there is still plenty of time for those of you who might have young readers working hard to finish their books.
WHO CAN VOTE?
Anyone who registered with us for the Forest of Reading® and who has been keeping track of their books in our binder will be on our list. They MUST complete all 10 books in the Blue Spruce™ category, or at least 8 books in the Silver Birch Express™, Silver Birch Fiction™, Silver Birch Non-Fiction™, or Red Maple™ categories. If they’ve been marking them off in the binder, then I know who has completed enough books to vote. Please check the list posted in the library to make sure your reader is on it.
WHAT IF WE DIDN’T READ ENOUGH BOOKS?
This is an official voting process—-our results are sent to Toronto for the official tally so that the awards may be given to the Canadian authors and illustrators with the most votes. In order for a reader to honestly pick the best books in their categories, we’ve decided that reading at least eight out of the ten books will give them a good feel for the category. (In Blue Spruce™ it is all ten because they are short picture books.)
If they don’t read the required number of books, we cannot let them vote. However, EVERYONE registered for the program can come to our voting night party. We’d love for readers to see how exciting it is to finish, and be able to participate in the vote. We’ll talk about the books a little, announce our winners, and yes….eat some cake.
WHEN WILL THE OFFICIAL WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED?
Although we’ll pick our winners, it will take about a month for the tallies to come in from everyone participating around the province. We’ll leave our winners posted, and then will post the official winners sometime in mid-may.
If you have any other questions, please give us a call at the library. Otherwise, we hope to see you at the library on voting night!
