Only Two More Days!

We’ve given away iTunes gift cards, books, candy, games, duct tape, wallets, magic tricks, drum kits, even more candy, stickers, chocolate, graphic novels and, oh, did I mention candy?

So far, kids have spent over $170 book bucks this week, and we still have two more days! Don’t forget, if you still have book bucks to spend, you can come in anytime today or Saturday and pick out something delightful.  This was our window yesterday afternoon. It might look different today, but we’ll keep it well stocked until the end of the week.

Happy spending!

Book Bucks Week #2!

20130807_160836_1We’re gearing up for our last Book Buck spending week, the teen portion of our TD Summer Reading Club 2013! This summer, we had so many teens reading and collecting book bucks that we’ve had to expand this wonderful reading program. In our first spending week, our readers were reluctant to spend all their reading cash in order to save it for wonderful prizes this month. Don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of great things to purchase, and the “store” will change daily and always be well stocked.

So, get ready. Our store will open on Monday, September 9th and will stay open until Saturday, September 14th. Bring all your book bucks and be ready to spend, spend, spend!

Grand Prize Alert!

This is our last week for the TD Summer Reading Club 2013 at the Carleton Place Public Library! That means, kids have all of this week to finish reading their books, drop into the library with passports, and pick up their ballots, stickers and pieces for Hollybook City! Next week, we’ll pick a day and do the draws for the grand prize and all of the other prizes we have waiting for our wonderful young readers.

It’s been a fantastic summer, with so many kids of all ages reading and trying to achieve all they can. Our city has grown from a blank green space to a wildly creative plot of land where lots of wonderful things must be going on! We’ve noticed that kids have picked plots in a specific block and placed their buildings, trees,  and people etc. Land claims are fierce here! But we’ve got a few key places that have set the tone for the city….the library, the TD Bank, the bandstand where One Direction drove their fans wild, the Hollybook sign atop the mountain and even our own version of the Eiffel Tower! It’s certainly been exciting, and we’re looking forward to seeing it all complete next week.

The most fun thing?  Each piece—every tree, animal and cloud—represents 3 books that someone has read.  That’s a lot of books! And each type of piece lets us know how far someone made it through the summer, whether they read three books or 30 books. We’ll post the grand total next week to let everyone know.

So, if you’ve got a young reader who is almost finished, make sure you get in here this week to finish up.  And keep an eye out for our winners, which we’ll post in the library next week!

Good luck everyone!

Hooray for Hollybook!

After an exciting summer, our giant city has a name: Hollybook!  We held a contest for our TD Summer Reading Club 2013 program called “Name Our City”, and the ideas started pouring in! After a long and difficult decision, we thought Hollybook best described the exciting place we’ve created. After all, there are plenty of buildings, people and traffic, and even One Direction stopped to perform here. It’s a happening place, and everyone wanted to “GO!”

She’s Off to School!

After another whirlwind summer, Emma is almost finished at the library. We’ve had a great couple of months and lots of kids participated in her wonderful programs. We’re sad to see her go, and we’re already counting the days until next summer.  Who will tell us about all the latest nail polish trends?  Who will keep us up to date on the newest One Direction videos?  And who will Instagram everything fun that happens here? Thanks, Emma, for keeping us entertained and informed!

 Have a great school year!

This Is Where I Read Day!

All summer long, we’ve been asking our patrons to participate in some fun activities on Instagram for our TD Summer Reading Club 2013. After doing a 30- Day Instagram Book challenge in July, we thought everyone would be up for something a little more laid back.  And since August is all about making the most of the last days of summer vacation, we decided to run a ‘THIS IS WHERE I READ’ challenge.

We want to see where you’re reading this month. Maybe it’s by the pool, maybe on the bus or maybe you read while you’re walking (please be careful!). Post a photo to Instagram to show us where you’re reading and use the hashtags #cplibrary and the new one, #thisiswhereiread.  We’d love the see the most interesting places people take their books.

For something special, we’re having a special day on Wednesday, August 21st, which we’re calling “This is Where I Read” Day. Join us that day in Carleton Place by reading books in public—in line at the grocery store, while you’re having coffee at Timmy’s or maybe even while you’re pumping gas.  If we spot you, we’ll take your photo and post it. We’ll be out between 1 – 3pm to see who is reading in Carleton Place.

So, get reading!
