Even though many of us don’t know much about it, January is Braille Literacy month. While we don’t have many books in braille or about braille at the library, our participation in the TD Summer Reading Program each year always brings us a wonderful braille sticker to give out to the children who take part. I have to wonder if Braille might be something fading into nonexistence as the world of technology advances. But there are many interesting things to know about Braille that most of us probably have no idea about.
Braille is not a language, which is one of the biggest misconceptions, and is not used exclusively in English. There are different grades of Braille for beginners to more advanced users. And did you know that most legally blind people can read print of some sort, using a device such as a magnifying glass? You can find out 15 interesting facts about Braille right here.
We should all be more aware that there are different types of literacy in the world, and not all of them are as obvious as we think. We’re always happy to celebrate readers, no matter what form reading takes!
